Cultural Diversity & Assessment

There are four main sections:

  1. Culture —Introduces the concept of culture, its relevance to mental health, and tools that can help clarify the role culture plays in health settings.
  2. Interview — Uses questions adapted from the Cultural Formation Interview (CFI) to explore culture, mental health and well-being.
  3. Key Concepts — Focuses on issues to consider when conducting culturally responsive interviews that may be relevant for consumers.
  4. Expanding Practice — Includes questions to prompt practitioner reflection as well as links to more information and other resources.

Two digital stories used in this resource are drawn from the collection, ‘Finding our way’. These stories are original and owned by their creators. VTMH thanks James and Akeemi for continuing to share their personal stories of mental health recovery for the benefit of practitioner learning. Watch all the stories here.

This resource also features Kesver, from ‘Our Voices: Stories of Carers from Migrant and Refugee Backgrounds’. She tells her story in Turkish, with English subtitles. All five short films in this collection are available to view here.

Views of the natural world have been used to evoke notions of ‘perspective’ and ‘encounter’. The landscape of Wilson’s Promontory in Victoria — a place of wild beaches, bush trails, and mountains — was front of mind. Familiar garden flowers also make an appearance.
